Do Infertile Women Have Periods?

Though it is true that ovulation problems like missed periods, irregular periods, and no periods are a sign of female infertility. However, a study reveals that Infertility doesn't always mean you won't have periods. According to researchers & doctors, you can have issues with conceiving but still have a period every month.

If you're dealing with ovulation problems, your fertility doctor may recommend fertility drugs to stimulate your ovulation. But other than ovulation disorders there can be other physical and emotional factors too that may cause the inability to conceive.

Common Cause of Infertility in Females

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that has a negative impact on fertility in women. PCOS can impact the quality of eggs, cause ovulation disorder due to excess production of estrogen by ovaries, and irregular & missed periods. Women with PCOS are often insulin resistant and have obesity, abnormal hair growth on the face or body, acne, and a high risk of diabetes & high blood pressure.

  • Endometriosis

A chronic condition when endometrial-like tissue (glands and stroma) grow outside the uterus, ovaries, and tubes and even on your bladder or intestines which induces a chronic inflammatory reaction, scar tissue, and adhesions that may distort the functioning of reproductive organs.

  • Damaged fallopian tubes (tubal infertility)

Blocked fallopian tubes keep sperm from getting to the egg or block the passage of the fertilized egg into the uterus.

  • Age

Age is also a crucial factor for female reproductive health. As the woman ages, both egg count and quality decline.

  • Smoking  & Excessive alcohol consumption

Poor lifestyle choices are also the reason why you may have trouble conceiving.  It not only has negative effects on your fertility health but your general health and the health of a fetus.

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Stress
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Uterine fibroids

So apart from menstrual problems, other factors can also contribute to female infertility. It might be possible for you to have regular cycle periods but still face difficulty in getting pregnant. However, if you notice your menstrual cycle has changed, you must keep an accurate record of when your period begins and ends, along with the level of bleeding in periods.

It’s common for couples to experience issues with infertility and they may even have questions like -  ‘how to test if a woman is infertile?’
